4. Combat Comedians Dinner Show

Kiwanis Club of Greece NY partnered with Veterans Plus Assistance Corp. to bring a night of laughs with Combat Comedians Dinner Show. Combat Comedians is a program that teaches creative writing and trains veterans on how to perform live comedy shows to help overcome their PTSD. 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 15 at Barnard Restaurant and Party House. kiwanisgreece.org

1. Curator’s Choice: A Collection of the Area’ Finest Artworks

Whitman Works Co. in Penfield presents Curator’s Choice: A Collection of the Area’ Finest Artworks. Diverse pieces of art in this exhibit come from a storied list of local artisans including Mark Groaning, TeeJay Dill, Shawn Conn, Peggy Kehoe and Gretchen Lee Carletta. 2. City of Rochester Roc Women’s Fest

This Saturday, Aug. 17 marks the third annual City of Rochester Roc Women’s Fest at Martin Luther King Jr. Park from noon to 5 p.m. There will be free fitness classes, beauty services, kid-friendly activities, shopping, food and drinks—and all are offered by female business owners. At 1 p.m. M/Body offers boxing and at 2 p.m. they offer barre. Pearls Physique is hosting party Zumba at 4 p.m. cityofroc.gov

3. 12th Annual Sankofa Theatre Festival

The Multi-Use Community Cultural Center is hosting the 12th Annual Sankofa Theatre Festival. The festival showcases local playwrights, directors and actors, and over two weeks there will be a multitude of full-length and one-act plays. On Aug. 28 at 7:30 p.m. there is the Night of TENS, where each play is 10 minutes long and told through the lens of African American life. Sunday, Aug. 18 through Sept. 1 muccc.org

4. The Birdcage

Geva Theatre Center and ImageOut present a screening of the 1996 box office hit “The Birdcage” at 7 p.m. on Aug. 19. Directed by Mike Nichols, the film follows a gay cabaret owner and his drag queen partner who put up a false straight front so their son can introduce them to his fiancée’s right-wing parents. Starring Nathan Lane and Robin Williams, this is a remake of the 1973 play “La Cage aux Folles,” which begins running next month at Geva. gevatheatre.org

5. FLX Fermentation Festival

Rochester Museum and Science Center is offering the first ever FLX Fermentation Festival at the Cumming Nature Center. On Saturday, Aug. 17 there will be a series of small-group, 75-minute workshops led by fermentation expert Sandor Katz, and on Sunday Katz will lead an intensive hands-on workshop. rmsc.org
