Don Giovanni

don-giovanniEastman Opera Theatre (EOT) is performing a rendition of Don Juan meeting the #Metoo movement with Mozart’s “Don Giovanni.”

The show premiered in Prague at the National Theater in 1787. This darkly comedic piece is one of Mozart’s most talked-about operas. EOT offers a contemporary look at the themes present in the opera in the era of the Time’s Up and #Metoo movement and how the piece remains relevant today.

“‘Don Giovanni’ is filled with contradictions and contrasts, shadows and light. Mozart’s music is delicately baroque one moment and richly pre-romantic the next,” says director Stephen Carr. “The challenge is to bring Giovanni to life in a way that honors its origins while pushing every new audience to reflect on how the subject matter relates to our lives today.”

Giovanni’s favorite hobby is seducing then jilting innocent women. While the production typically takes place in mid-18th century Spain, EOT’s version brings the play to a 21st century urban location where women often feel unsafe. Action unfolds as a period piece juxtaposed with modern sensibilities.

Performances run April 5, 6 and 7 at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre. esm.rochester.edu

Music quintet fivebyfive presents “Sweet Air,” a multi-sensory musical delight featuring modern chamber music from fivebyfive, art by media artists W. Michelle Harris and tasty treats from Sinful Sweets.

Borrowing the name of David Lang’s “Sweet Air,” the piece is receiving its Rochester debut on this program. The second half of the event is a bit darker with the hauntingly beautiful “Rounder Songs.” “Rounder Songs” meshes 21-century post-minimalist classical music and North American old-time through a song cycle for voice, banjo and chamber ensemble.

4 p.m. on Sunday, April 7 at the Rochester Academy of Medicine. fivebyfivemusic.com
