The scenic Canandaigua gardens earned a nod in the venue category of the international contest and was one of 34 venues listed as a winner in the Buffalo area. The Rochester area was not listed, although the Syracuse area was. It was the fifth consecutive year Sonnenberg has been named a leading wedding venue.

Officials said Sonnenberg received the award based on its “outstanding experience working with real newlyweds.”

“We are celebrating our 11th annual Couples’ Choice Awards, where we honor our vendors who help make millions of couples’ big day one to remember,” WeddingWire CEO Timothy Chi said in a statement. “Not only are these hard-working and distinguished wedding professionals, such as Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park, a fundamental part of the wedding planning process for engaged couples, but they help make WeddingWire a trusted source for wedding planning.”

Sonnenberg’s mansion dates to 1887, when New York City banker Frederick Ferris Thompson and his wife, Mary Clark Thompson, had the Queen Anne-style house built as a summer home. Between 1901 and 1920, the widowed Mary Thompson created the formal gardens that are open to visitors today between May and October.
