47th Annual Turtle Hill Folk Festival

pepper-sassafras2Golden Link Folk Singing Society is hosting its 47th Annual Turtle Hill Folk Festival at the Rotary Sunshine Camp in Rush this weekend.

What makes this festival so remarkable is that guests don’t just see the performers on stage, they also interact with the musicians during workshops and presentations.

Tonight from 7 to 10 p.m. Pepper & Sassafras (pictured), Jamcrackers and Christine Lavin perform. Jeffrey Pepper Rogers is the founding editor of Acoustic Guitar Magazine and the grand prize winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest. Rogers harmonizes with Wendy Ramsay, who also plays the flute, clarinet, guitar and accordion. Josh Dekaney joins the two with a unique percussion kit.

Jamcrackers includes the dynamic trio Dan Berggren, Peggy Lynn and Dan Duggan. The three effortlessly blend folk and blues, ballads, gospel and dance tracks.

Lavin is a singer/songwriter/guitarist who recently released her 23rd studio album, titled “Spaghettification.” She’s known for her humor and eclectic performances which could include baton twirling, wind chimes and a napkin folding tutorial.

Concerts continue from 7 to 10 p.m. on Saturday. Kicking off the show is Matthew Corrigan of Tough Old Bird. Corrigan mixes folk and blues with intricate acoustic guitar work.

Following Corrigan is Reggie Harris & Scott Ainslie. The duo has a historical focus and they perform spirituals, songs of the Underground Railroad, Civil Rights anthems, work and slave songs, blues and original music.

Finally, Bruce Molsky and special guest Allison de Groot wrap up the festival. Molsky shines on the fiddle, guitar and banjo and has played with big names like the Grammy-nominated Fiddlers Four, Mozaik and Donal Lunny. Joining him on the banjo is de Groot, who is one-third of Molsky’s Mountain Drifters.
