Rural-based theatre company Shake on the Lake will perform William Shakespeare’s “Richard III” at St. Joseph’s Park.

Josh Rice and Pilar McKay started Shake on the Lake at Silver Lake in 2012. They believed the lake was the perfect setting to perform the legendary playwright’s works. Shake on the Lake has come to be known for being fun, fast and physical. The shows boast live music, improvised comedy and 360-degree staging that brings the audience into the action.

“Tackling one of Shakespeare’s most intriguing tragedies, “Richard III,” with six actors is the exact kind of challenge we enjoy when devising our shows,” says Chad Bradford, director of “Richard III” and associate artistic director of Shake on the Lake. “It really is over thirty characters with just six actors.”

Rice, co-founder of Shake on the Lake and the New York State Puppet Festival, will star as Richard III, also known as the Duke of Gloucester. Richard plots to steal the throne from his younger brother, Edward, and has no reservations about destroying anyone and anything that stands in his way.

“For a rural-based theatre company like ours it is critical to find urban-rural connections to help us thrive in the arts,” says McKay, managing director of Shake on the Lake. “The Landmark Society understands what we are trying to accomplish in rural communities throughout Western New York by bringing the arts to historic places and to spark the imaginations of people who live there – we’re excited to bring this creative energy to the city of Rochester.”

The show begins at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 6 at St. Joseph’s Park. shakeonthelake.org
