Bollywood isn’t usually a term that comes to mind when you think of Shakespeare. But Rochester two-gentlemenCommunity Players’ Shakespeare Players and WallByrd Theatre Co. are giving a Shakespeare play a Bollywood twist. “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” is this year’s Shakespeare in the Highland Bowl. Best friends Proteus and Valentine live in Verona, but Valentine decides to leave for Mumbai in search of love and romance. He tries to convince Proteus to travel with him, but Proteus wants to remain in Verona with his beloved Julia. While in Mumbai, Valentine meets Silvia, daughter of the duke, and the two fall in love. Proteus soon shows up in Mumbai, forced to leave Verona and Julia by his mother who insists he join Valentine. Despite his “devotion” to Julia, Proteus falls for Silvia, sparking a love triangle and subsequent chaos. Director Virginia Monte keeps up the Bollywood theme by switching the gentlemen’s destination from Milan to Mumbai. Monte is known for her award-winning 2016 Highland Bowl production of “Romeo and Juliet” and the 2017 production of “Macbeth” at the Lyric Theatre. “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” will be performed at the Highland Bowl every night except Mondays from 8 to 10:30 p.m. Show opens Friday and runs to July 21. rochestercommunityplayers.org
