Manufacturing design competition subject of conference at MCC

Business and education leaders from across the region will gather at Monroe Community College’s Brighton Campus Tuesday evening to hear a pitch for a new regional design competition with manufacturing in mind.

The conference’s main sponsor, Finger Lakes Advanced Manufacturers’ Enterprise, or FAME, is a public-private partnership that promotes careers in high-tech manufacturing. The keynote speaker is Jeremy Bout, producer of Reality Redesign, a competition in which students design, manufacture and present their response to a challenge in a reality TV-styled event. FAME is hoping to bring the contest to the Rochester-Finger Lakes region.

“Reality Redesigned brings classroom learning to life with challenges where the solution draws on textbook learning and creative application by teams of students,” said Mike Mandina, past chair of FAME and president of Optimax Systems Inc., an optics manufacturer in Wayne County. “Reality Redesigned fosters rich engagement between students, parents, academia and industry that is fun, highly visible and compelling.”

Mandina said FAME believes the competition will positively influence career awareness for the region’s workforce pipeline that ultimately will reduce the skills gap.

Bout will join a number of area leaders from NYMAT Machine Tool Corp., MCC, Eastman Kodak Co. and OrthoClinical Diagnostics at Tuesday’s event.
