Engineering Society honorees announced

The Rochester Engineering Society announced the recipients of several awards that will presented at the 116th RES Annual Gala.

resProfessor Martin E. Gordon, professor and program director for undergraduate studies at RIT and president and founder of Gordon Engineering PC, will receive the 2017 Engineer of the Year award.

Emily M. Smith, director of transportation, shareholder and member of the board of directors at Fisher Associates, will receive the 2017 Kate Gleason Young Engineer of the Year award.

Two finalists were also announced for the Young Engineer of the Year award: Brett Eliasz, electrical discipline leader at Bergmann Associates, and Nickolas Vamivakas, associate professor of optics, physics and material sciences at The Institute of Optics, Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, University of Rochester.

RES will also present four Engineer of Distinction awards:

  • Stephen G. Mischissin, director of utilities and energy management at University of Rochester
  • Donald P. Nims, principal & practice leader – hydro power systems, Bergmann Associates, DPC
  • Lee M. Loomis, retired, RG&E, current director, RES, past president RES
  • Richard E. Rice, director, project development, M.J. Engineering and Land Surveying

The RES Annual Gala will be held Saturday, April 14, at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. More than $25,000 in scholarships will be awarded to local high school and college students to support their engineering education. Information about the gala can be found at www.roceng.org.

An Engineering Section profiling the award recipients will appear in the April 13 edition of the Rochester Business Journal.
