University of Rochester Medicine’s Wilmot Cancer Institute will hold its fifth annual Wilmot Warrior Walk this weekend.
Sunday’s fundraiser features a 5k, 10k and a one-mile walk, as well as a post-race celebration. Proceeds from the annual event support cancer research and the Judy DiMarzo Cancer Survivorship Program at Wilmot.
“The funds raised through the Wilmot Warrior Walk are critical to helping find new potential cancer treatments and to supporting cancer survivors on their journey,” Wilmot director Jonathan Friedberg M.D. said in a statement.
The event has raised more than $100,000 this year and more than 1,000 people who have been impacted by cancer are expected to attend.
“When someone saves your child’s life you’re committed. You’re loyal,” said Cheryl Pohlman, whose son, Mark Bianchi Jr., was diagnosed with stage 4 diffuse B-cell lymphoma in 2016. Pohlman’s family formed “Team Mark” and have raised more than $5,000 for the event.
Pohlman added: “I just think as a community we need to rally together, because if we’re not going to support cancer research and survivorship, who’s going to?”
The walk will be held Sept. 10 at the Highland Park Bowl. A celebration of cancer survivorship will begin at 10:30 a.m. with live music, bounce houses and face painting for kids, massages and yoga and seven food trucks.
Following the celebration, Wilmot will recognize the top fundraisers as well as the team with the most team spirit. Walk participants can register online for $35 at WarriorWalk.URMC.edu.
