Inaugural Parklet to be unveiled

After two years of preparation Rochester’s inaugural Parklet—a small seating area or green space designated as a public amenity—will be showcased to the public on Friday at 10 a.m.

A ceremony is to be held at 1344 University Ave., where the parklet is located. The space was previously a several hundred foot defunct fire lane, officials said. Now, it is a public green space with built-in seating. More seating, greenery and bicycle parking are planned for the next stages of the project.

The Rochester Parklet team raised $12,828 through 211 backers via a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter in October 2015 to make the parklet a reality. It was created in a collaborative effort by Joe Bean Coffee Roasters, Staach Inc., Slow Road Consulting and the city of Rochester.

The city has been working on the creation of a municipal parklet program to formulate new policy so additional ones can be built in the future, officials said.

There will be a Parklet Party on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. The event is open to the public.
