People over 65 more numerous in Rochester than nationally

Rochester’s baby boomer population is above average in size, according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau population estimates for 2016 released June 22. Even in Monroe County—the area’s youngest, according to Census figures—over 16 percent of the population was 65 or older, compared with only 15.2 percent of the total U.S. population. With some 19 percent of its population age 65 or older—an increase of three percent since 2011—and a median age of 43.6, Ontario County was the area’s oldest in 2016, according to the Census report.
