Wegmans Food Markets Inc.’s Wegmans Employee Scholarship Program will award 2,019 employees with college tuition for the upcoming academic year, officials announced Wednesday.
The grocery retailer anticipates paying roughly $5.1 million in tuition assistance during the 2017-2018 sch
ool year for both new and returning recipients, the company said.
“It’s important to us that our employees are engaged in our business and continue to learn and grow,” said Colleen Wegman, president and CEO in a statement. “Our employee scholarship program is just one way we’re providing growth opportunities for our people by helping them pursue higher education and career goals that benefit both the individual and the greater ommunity.”
2017 recipients include 200 students who are part of the Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection—a 30-year program that helps youth earn high school diplomas and prepare for careers.
Over 35,000 employees have been awarded scholarships—a total of $110 million—since 1984.
Wegmans is an employment partner with Hillside Work-Scholarship. The company offers part-time employment for students in Rochester, Syracuse and Buffalo and in Prince George’s County, Md.
To celebrate this year’s recipients, there will be cake at all 92 Wegmans locations May 20 at 11 a.m.
Part-time employee scholarship recipients are eligible to receive up to $1,500 per year for four years and full-time employees can receive up to $2,200 per year for four years, according to Wegmans.
To receive a scholarship, Wegmans employees must meet work-performance criteria. Eligibility is also based on a minimum number of work hours over a specified time period, the company said.
