New Pike president eyes growth for company in 2017

The new president of Pike Co. Inc. expects the firm to see growth this year from a variety of sectors, including health care and hospitality.

Its current projects include serving as general contractor on a roughly $75 million jail in Sullivan County and serving as project manager and general contractor for a $55 million university health center at Cornell University.

“You have to be diversified to succeed in this business,” William Tehan said. “You can’t rely on one particular niche.”

Tehan was named president of the commercial building firm in mid-November. He also serves as chief operating officer of the Pike Cos. Ltd., the holding company of the Pike Co. and LeCesse Construction Services LLC.

In his new role, Tehan will focus on Pike Co.’s day-to-day operations, which include making sure the firm is competitive with its pricing and has the best team on site, from employees to subcontractors.

His background, especially two years in the chief operating officer role, has prepared him for the new position, Tehan said.  He started his career with Pike Cos. Ltd. in 2001 as treasurer and corporate secretary and has held multiple leadership positions within the company. He succeeds Rufus Judson as president. Judson has transitioned from president of Pike Co. and CEO of the holding company to solely CEO.

Tehan has been praised by Pike Cos. Ltd. management, including Judson, who said he exemplifies the company’s values, including building long-term relationships with clients.

Tehan comes from a family with a history of construction—his grandfather and uncle both worked in the industry.

Pike Cos. Ltd. ranked as the region’s second-largest commercial builder on the most recent Rochester Business Journal list.

Regarding the holding company’s two units, the Pike Co. provides construction services to nonresidential markets across the Northeast, and LeCesse provides construction services to the multi-family residential market, focusing on senior housing, apartments and student housing as well as cultural centers.

The Pike Cos. has roughly 575 employees and logged sales of $520 million in 2016. Tehan expects a low, double-digit percentage increase in sales this year over last year.

One area that has seen growth is retail distribution, Tehan noted. Pike Co. recently completed a $51 million FedEx Corp. distribution center in Hamburg, Erie County.

Also helping drive that growth are several projects in the works at Pike, including $100 million worth of housing work at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, and projects at the $440 million del Lago Resort & Casino in Seneca County, Tehan said.

Rochester activity include a modernization project at East High School, expansion at Genesee Brewing Co. and relocation of Five Star Bank’s regional administrative center to Chestnut Street.

Finding skilled employees to complete jobs continues to be an industry challenge, Tehan said, noting the jobs pay a competitive wage but are hard work.

“Construction is a demanding business,” he said.
