Abundance Co-op breaks ground at new South Ave. location

Rochester’s Abundance Co-op has begun construction at its new location at 571 South Ave., officials announced Wednesday.

A groundbreaking ceremony will be held Dec. 7 at its new location.

The community grocery store will host a grand opening in 2017. It has some 2,400 shareholders in Rochester, officials say. It has been in existence for more than four decades.

The County of Monroe Industrial Development Agency approved sales tax exemptions of $86,800 to Genesee Co-op Natural Foodstore Inc., which does business as Abundance Cooperative Market & Abundance Co-op, to move to larger space in the South Wedge.

The $1.7 million project will affect 22 workers and is expected to create six new jobs over the next three years. State and regional economic benefits are projected to be $452,000.
