The Society for the Protection and Care of Children, known as SPCC, was founded as the Rochester Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children in 1875 when animal abuse laws existed but child abuse laws did not. SPCC was the nation’s first nonprofit agency focused on child abuse. For over 140 years, SPCC has remained committed to serving children whose lives have been affected by violence, abuse, grief, poverty, malnutrition and teen pregnancy.
SPCC has six programs that serve over 7,000 participants annually:
Family Trauma Intervention Program: Experienced counselors provide in-home counseling and support to children and their families affected by trauma, domestic violence and grief-related issues such as child fatalities and community violence.
Teenage Parent Support Services: This endeavor partners with young parents and their children to build positive and trusting relationships as a catalyst for personal growth and success. Support and guidance is offered in the areas of housing, health care, education, employment and parenting.
Supervised Visitation Program provides children who are separated from one or both parents the opportunity to maintain safe contact through supervised visitations or exchanges. Parents receive individualized support and education to improve their parenting skills and strengthen the parent-child relationship.
Therapeutic Visitation Program: Seasoned clinicians partner with families and professionals to create individualized therapeutic plans for families needing a higher level of support to achieve healthy visitations.
Finger Lakes Women, Infants and Children Program, or WIC, provides eligible families with a variety of nutritious foods, nutritional education and breastfeeding support, along with referrals to community resources to promote and enhance good health.
WIC Vendor Management Agency: As an adjunct to WIC, this agency ensures WIC participants have access to all of the healthy foods prescribed by WIC nutritionists through oversight of contracts with some 400 WIC vendors.
SPCC’s main office is at 148 S. Fitzhugh St. and its website is www.spcc-roch.org. President and CEO Lisa Butt oversees a paid staff of 95.
