A SHARP FOCUS: Premier Laser Spa

Michael Linehan believes the sky could be the limit for his business, Premier Laser Spa.

With only 1 percent of the population getting laser hair removal, Linehan sees a lot of opportunities for growth.

“We can go as far as we think we can go,” Linehan said, adding the goal is to be a recognized brand across the country.

He and Edward Naylon are co-CEOs of the hair removal business. Linehan describes the two as ambitious and aggressive—a good combination when it comes to succeeding in business.

“There is a competitive spirit here to be the best,” he said.

Naylon had worked in the hair removal field prior to Premier Laser Spa, gaining experience in the local market, including cosmetic laser sales. He went on to co-own a laser spa with Michael Spitale at the Michael Spitale Salon.

Naylor decided to branch out on his own, selling his share of the local laser spa and opening locations outside the Rochester area. He partnered with Linehan to form Premier Laser Spa in 2012.

Although the two were both graduates of McQuaid Jesuit High School, they attended during different years and did not meet until a mutual business associate introduced them.

Linehan’s professional background includes owning Colie’s Cafe restaurants.

Entrepreneurship also runs in his family. His father, Paul Linehan, owned Hallmark Cards Inc.’s dealerships throughout the Northeast and his uncle is Thomas Wilmot Sr., chairman of Wilmorite Inc.

Premier Laser Spa’s corporate office is in Perinton, but the closest clinic is in Syracuse. The first clinic was in Albany, followed by Cleveland. Today, there are 23 locations in 14 states that stretch from Minneapolis to Orlando, Fla.— where Naylon is based—to Boston.

The original plan was to double the business over the first three years. Linehan and Naylon met that goal, and Linehan said they are now reviewing the firm’s systems and processes and building its infrastructure.

The partners are looking to continue to grow the operation. To help do so, a call center was opened roughly one year ago and they are now bringing in a chief financial officer and internal marketing staff.

The business has grown its workforce since its inception. When it started, Premier Laser Spa had 50 employees. It jumped to 100 workers in 2013 and 154 in 2014; currently there are close to 171 employees with some 25 at the local corporate office.

Sales have increased as well, growing 15 percent each year on average, Linehan said.

Around 91 percent of Premier Laser Spa’s customers are women, but the company is seeing an increase in number of men using the service, Linehan added.

Premier Laser Spa offers fee consultations and uses lasers that are approved by the Federal Drug Administration. Each site is overseen by a medical director. A package of eight treatments costs, on average, $1,000. Customers typically see a 95 percent reduction in hair as a result.

While the cost is still an obstacle in the industry, Naylon said increased awareness of the service and the growing number of businesses offering it has helped bring the price down.

One of the reasons for the firm’s success is that its focus is on laser hair removal and superior customer service, Linehan said. That focus allows the business to deliver consistent results.

“The service works,” Naylon said, adding that the equipment and trained staff are keys to success. “The combination delivers superior results.”

The firm would not be as strong without its employees, Naylon added.

“It takes a lot of expertise to be good at this,” he said. “You’re only as good as the people you employ.”

Future plans could include offering complementary services, Linehan said, noting that treatment rooms have been left open in anticipation of those plans. There are no current plans for a facility in Rochester area.

While Premier Laser Spa’s locations are outside the Rochester region, Linehan has no plans to move the firm’s base.

“We are committed to the area,” he said.
