A range of choices

Independent living without services: Typically restricted to older adults, usually ages 50 and over, although some facilities may include younger adults with disabilities. Generally does not include supportive services to address the needs of aging residents. Local examples: The Highlands at Pittsford (The Cottages and Hahnemann Square Apartments), Unity Senior Housing (The Village at Unity, Moore Park, Resch Commons, Hilton Park), St. John’s Senior Services (St. John’s Meadows, Brickstone by St. John’s)

Independent living with services: Services may include meals, limited assistance with personal care, housekeeping, transportation, social activities, laundry, staff coordinator who helps residents access services in the community. Legacy Senior Living Communities (Legacy at Parklands, Willow Pond, Fairways, Clover Blossom and others), Episcopal Senior Life Communities (River Edge Manor, Pinehurst Senior Living, Valley Manor)

Assisted living/enhanced assisted living residences: Provides or arranges for on-site 24/7 monitoring, daily food service, personal and home care services, case management, recreation, and medication assistance and supervision. Residents do not have a medical condition requiring 24-hour skilled nursing or medical care, among other requirements. DePaul Senior Living Communities (Westwood Commons, Woodcrest Commons), GrandeVie Senior Living Communities (GrandeVie Home for Adults), Fairport Baptist Home

Adult care facilities (adult homes): Most offer private and semi-private rooms with private or shared bathrooms. Provide the following services: meals, housekeeping, laundry/linen service, limited transportation services, social activities, some personal care, medication management and 24-hour supervision. Atria Senior Living (Atria Greece and Penfield), Brookdale Senior Living Solutions (Brookdale Fairport and West Side Rochester)

Memory care facilities: Specifically designed for people with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia. Are either freestanding or units within an adult care facility, enriched housing program or nursing home. Friendly Senior Living (Glenmere), Jewish Senior Life (Lodge at Wolk Manor), St. Ann’s Community (Cherry Ridge), Unity Senior Housing (Bell Grove)

Skilled nursing homes: 24-hour skilled nursing care, related services or rehabilitative services for the injured or disabled. Short- and long-term care is provided. Rochester Regional Health Skilled Nursing Homes (Edna Tina Wilson Living Center, Wegman Family Cottages, Unity Living Center)
