Irondequoit, Fairport public libraries get state funds

Two grants totaling more than $500,000 will be used to build and renovate libraries in the area, state Sen. Rich Funke and Assembly Majority Leader Joseph Morelle announced Thursday.

The Irondequoit and Fairport public libraries received the funding through the state’s public library construction funds. The allocation includes $389,000 for the construction of the new library on Titus Avenue in Irondequoit and $190,000 for the renovation of the existing library on South Main Street in the village of Fairport.

“This funding will help to complete the projects at the two libraries, allowing them to better serve even more local families for years to come,” Funke said.

Ground was broken on the Irondequoit library began in April 2014. It will replace the town’s former Helen McGraw and Pauline Evans branches with a single, centrally-located library at the town hall campus on Titus Avenue, officials noted.

Work on the renovated Fairport library began in the spring and includes the repair or replacement of mechanical systems, expansion of electrical and computer infrastructure and general aesthetic improvements, officials noted. The library is slated to open in late September and will include an expanded children’s section, more work and meeting space and better access to technology.
