A Rochester physician faces criminal health-care fraud charges over alleged false billings to private and government insurers.
Radiologist Thomas Stephenson M.D. double-billed Excellus BlueCross Blue Shield, MVP Health Care and Medicare, collecting more than $189,000 for services he did not provide, a one-count information filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Rochester claims.
Stephenson overbilled the insurers between 2007 and 2010, filing and being reimbursed for multiple claims stating that he had interpreted two X-ray studies when he had actually interpreted one, assistant U.S. Attorney John Field alleges in the filing.
Stephenson, 71, appeared in federal court Monday, waived indictment and was released while his lawyers and federal prosecutors try to hammer out “a global resolution of all claims criminal and civil,” court records show. He is slated to return to court Oct. 14, appearing before U.S. District Judge Frank Geraci.
