Workers at Unity Living Center plan to picket

Stymied in attempts to reach a first-contract agreement with Unity Health System management since last fall, off-duty workers at Unity Living Center plan to mount an informational picket next week, SEIU1199 United Healthcare Workers East officials said Thursday.

Workers at the 130-employee skilled nursing facility at Unity’s St. Mary’s campus voted to form a bargaining unit last June. Talks over a first contract began in October. After 17 all-day sessions, negotiators have yet to come to terms on issues including wages, health coverage, child care and training, officials of the Service Employees International Union affiliate said.

Unless negotiators reach an agreement in a bargaining session slated for May 29, union officials said, off-duty Unity Living Center workers expect to mount a picket line May 30 at the health system’s St. Mary’s Campus.
