Golisano to announce major donation to Special Olympics

Paychex Inc. founder and chairman Thomas Golisano is slated to appear alongside former President Bill Clinton to announce a major donation to benefit the Special Olympics.

The announcement of the Golisano Foundation donation is slated for Sunday in New York City at the opening plenary session of the Clinton Global Initiative

Founded by Clinton in 2005, CGI seeks to spur world leaders to seek global solutions for problems such as poverty, hunger and income inequality. CGI annual meetings typically draw heads of state, Nobel Prize laureates and CEOs of major corporations as well as heads of foundations and non-governmental organizations.

Clinton is to introduce Golisano and Special Olympics chairman and CEO Timothy Shriver, who will then reveal details of the Golisano Foundation gift. Shriver’s mother, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, was a key figure in the establishment of the Special Olympics, which grew out of a camp for children with special needs that she started at her Maryland farm in 1962.

Long known locally for charitable works, Golisano’s gifts include some $34 million given over the past decade to the University of Rochester Medical Center’s Golisano Children’s Hospital.
