Bloomfield Central School District comprises rural and suburban communities. Despite its relatively small size, Bloomfield strives to offer its students a broad range of opportunities, including Advanced Placement classes, an International Baccalaureate program launched in 2006 and an occupational education program with the Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES. More than 85 percent of Bloomfield graduates go on to higher education. All programs in the district are at or above No Child Left Behind yearly progress requirements. In 2011, Bloomfield High School was ranked number 275 on the Washington Post High School Challenge, which indexes the merits of more than 1,900 public schools each year.

T
he Canandaigua City School District strives for two things: "Academic success for every child we serve" and "The development of good character in all students."  The attainment of these goals is supported by the Building Action Plan, a guideline for administration that is revisited and revised each summer. Canandaigua Academy, the district’s high school, offers more than 200 courses, including 15 Advanced Placement, an International Baccalaureate program and college credit through Finger Lakes Community College, Rochester Institute of Technology and SUNY College at Oneonta. Business First newspaper ranked Canandaigua Academy 10th out of 87 high schools in the eight-county Rochester region. More than 90 percent of the 2011 class earned Regents diplomas, and 79 percent of those graduates are pursuing higher education.
The district also boasts increased technology use and hands-on science experiences at all levels. There also are extensive extracurricular activities. Rochester’s Hochstein School of Music has a Canandaigua campus that offers opportunities for local students, and the high school earned the Outstanding Musical Production Award for Class A in both 2010 and 2011. Students in 7th to 12th grades enjoy 30 sports programs with 83 teams.

T
he Geneva City School District aims to prepare students for "lives of consequence." The district has had issues meeting state standards in the past but has documented recent improvements. Determined to improve the district, Geneva City School District sought assistance from the University of Rochester’s Margaret Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development, and employees are reworking the curriculum across the board.  Geneva High School offers eight or nine Advanced Placement courses every year, a large selection given the district’s small graduating class size. In 2011, 130 diplomas were issued, 117 of them Regents diplomas. The high school recently began offering free Sylvan tutoring and homework help after school, as well as Sylvan SAT Prep programs. Four spring sports teams were recognized as scholar-athletes for having an average team GPA of 90 or higher.

Gorham-Middlesex Central School District (Marcus Whitman)

Superintendent: Michael Chirco

T
he Marcus Whitman School District covers the towns of Benton, Gorham, Hopewell, Italy, Jerusalem, Middlesex, Potter, Seneca and Rushville. Student enrollment is declining. This decrease has led to severe budget cuts for the district and reduced teaching positions, something that the schools and superintendent Michael Chirco are passionate about overcoming. The number of failing grades for middle and high school students in the first two quarters increased from 2011 to 2012. However, the aim is to decrease the amount of failing marks for secondary students by 10% from last year. The probability of a proposed athletic merger is also becoming less feasible because of the economic conditions. Despite its small size, Marcus Whitman seems like a large, well-funded district, offering numerous extracurricular activities and sports programs. Small class sizes are a benefit to teachers and pupils, creating a more comfortable and less intimidating learning environment, district officials say. High school students in some classes can earn concurrent college credit in a partnership with Finger Lakes Community College.

S
urrounded by three lakes, the Honeoye Central School District is known not only for its challenging curriculum but for being the center of community activity in one of the most popular and scenic recreational areas in the state. Honeoye relies on a well-defined technology initiative that has been adding computers to elementary and secondary classrooms each year, as well as a strong academic core augmented by elective courses in visual and performing arts, business and technology. A full-day kindergarten program is offered, and teachers undergo an annual professional performance review with classroom observations each year. Advanced Placement classes and college-level courses through Syracuse University Project Advance and Finger Lakes Community College make it possible for high school students to earn college credit. In June 2012, the high school tennis team won the Section V Championships, demonstrating the athletics merits of the district as well.

M
anchester-Shortsville Central School District, also known as Red Jacket, is 30 miles southeast of Rochester in the Finger Lakes region. Students live mainly in the villages of Manchester and Shortsville. The district is progressive, officials say, and recognizes the changing nature of education. To embrace that change, small class sizes are utilized, with only 18 students in the average high school class. To encourage professional growth, staff development is a priority. Red Jacket faculty members use modern research, technology and learning theory to help students achieve. The district encourages students in theater arts, academics, and athletics as demonstrated in its monthly newsletters. The district recently updated its five-year long-range facilities plan and is planning its next facilities renovation project.

aples is located at the south end of Canandaigua Lake in the heart of the Finger Lakes. The district encompasses approximately 118 square miles and has a population of about 5,500. In 2007, the high school was awarded a silver medal in U.S. News and World Report’s annual America’s Best High Schools edition. The district says its core beliefs are that students are No. 1, all of them will graduate, and a collaborative culture is a key component of student success. Under new superintendent Kimberle Ward, the district is in the midst of a five-year comprehensive educational plan to set an even higher standard; the goal is to enrich the student experience with increasingly rigorous academics and broadening activities. This five-year plan includes the implementation of curriculum in all subject areas with special emphasis on literacy and technology integration and the College and Career Readiness Skills. Phase II of the district’s Capital Project will begin June 2012, including renovation of the main and guidance offices, the pool and the cafeteria; it is expected to be done in June 2014.

tudents in the Phelps-Clifton Springs Central School District, known as Midlakes, come from Clifton Springs, Phelps, Hopewell, Manchester and Seneca. The rural district is nestled in the heart of the Finger Lakes region between Canandaigua and Seneca lakes. Roughly 1,800 students attend Midlakes schools. Their academic performance has been on the rise in the last decade; the Regents graduation rate grew from 45 percent in 1999 to 94 percent in 2009. In May 2012, the Varsity Wrestling Team won a state championship, and the Varsity Cheerleading Team reclaimed the Finger Lakes East League cheerleading title. The district offers Advanced Placement courses and testing.

V
ictor Central School District is undergoing a capital improvement project in response to ongoing growth in the size of the student population. Ranked the second-fastest-growing district in the state, Victor is expected to have 5,000 students by 2019. A $28.7 million project was approved in March 2011 to add 36 classrooms and a new pool; the project is set to be finished in August 2014. The district also pushes sustainable living with the Victor Central Schools Green Initiative and explores learning around the world through the district’s global education. Students in the district excel in the classroom. Ninety-six percent of the class of 2011 earned a Regents diploma, a 1 percent increase from 2010. Science, technology, engineering and math continue to be a focus in the district. The junior high school was named a New York State School to Watch by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform. The curriculum across all grades includes a focus on community service and global knowledge.
