Ground was ceremonially broken Tuesday on a 5,000-square-foot training facility for welding, glasswork, blacksmithing and jewelry making at Mahany Welding Supply Co. Inc. in Gates.
The venture, called the Rochester Arc and Flame Center, is scheduled to open in January 2012 for recreational and professional training courses, gallery events for local artists, and with a retail outlet for glass, smithing and jewelry supplies, officials said.
Mahany Welding Supply has trained 3,000 students as welders, prompting company president Michael Krupnicki to launch the center, officials said.
Construction officially started late last month.
