Wegmans to award $4.5 million in employee scholarships

Wegmans Food Markets Inc. on Friday announced its employee scholarship recipients.

Now in its 28th year, the Wegmans Employee Scholarship Program is awarding $4.5 million in college tuition assistance to 1,102 Wegmans employees for the upcoming 2011/2012 academic year.

Since the program began in 1984, more than 25,000 Wegmans employees have been awarded scholarships totaling $81 million.

“We proudly carry on the scholarship tradition that my grandfather started 28 years ago,” President Colleen Wegman said in a statement. “Helping our employees on the path to higher education is one of the most important ways we can make a difference in their lives and in their local communities.”

As part of the program, part-time employee scholarship recipients are eligible to receive up to $1,500 a year for four years for a maximum of $6,000, and full-time employees can receive up to $2,200 a year for four years for a maximum of $8,800.

No limit is placed on the number of scholarships awarded each year and no restrictions are made on a student’s course of study. Recipients may choose any educational path they wish and enter any field they desire upon graduation. Many scholarship winners, however, have stayed with Wegmans after college, pursuing careers within the company, Wegmans officials stated.

To receive a scholarship, Wegmans employees must meet academic and work-performance criteria. Eligibility also is based on a minimum number of work hours over a specified time period.

Scholarship applications are reviewed by an outside committee of college admissions professionals and a team from Wegmans. The external committee evaluates student grades, extracurricular activities, and SAT scores; the internal Wegmans committee evaluates employee work performance.

Founded in 1916, Wegmans has 78 stores, up from 75 last year, in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia and Maryland. Its first New England store will open in Northborough, Mass., in October.
