RIT graduate named Inc.’s Entrepreneur of the Year

A graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology and member of its board of trustees has been named Entrepreneur of the Year by Inc. magazine.

Kevin Surace, a 1985 electrical engineering technology graduate, is on the cover of the magazine’s December issue. Surace is president and CEO of Serious Materials Inc., a Sunnyvale, Calif.-based business that manufactures building materials designed to reduce energy usage and carbon-dioxide generation in buildings.

Serious Materials’ EcoRock drywall material had earned the Green Tech Grand Award from Popular Science, best new product from Popular Mechanics and a Technology Innovation award from The Wall Street Journal. The company also has increased revenue 50 percent during 2009.

“It’s the Academy Award for growing companies,” Surace said of the Entrepreneur of the Year award. “It’s truly a testament to the team that is behind me. And this kind of exposure helps raise awareness of what we’re doing.”

Surace credited his RIT education with providing a solid foundation for his entrepreneurial ventures.
