UR makes list of best value in private colleges

The University of Rochester ranks among the 100 best values in private colleges for 2009-10 in a list published by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine.

UR ranked No. 34 and was one of four private universities in the state. The universities were ranked based on academic quality and affordability, with quality accounting for two-thirds of the total. It used categories like admission rate, students per faculty, total cost and average debt at graduation.

The list was divided into 50 entries for private universities and 50 for private liberal arts colleges. Pomona College finished atop the liberal arts list and California Institute of Technology led the private university list.

The other private universities in New York State are:

  • Columbia University (No. 7);
  • Cornell University (No. 18); and
  • Marist College (No. 46.

In addition, these N.Y. liberal arts colleges made the list:

  • Hamilton College (No. 14);
  • Vassar College (No. 18);
  • Colgate University (No. 23); and
  • Barnard College (No. 28).

The list will appear in Kiplinger’s December 2009 issue and online at www.kiplinger.com/reports/best-college-values/.
