Rochester area’s help-wanted listings decline

Rochester’s online help-wanted advertising fell from February to March, mirroring regional and nationwide trends, the Conference Board Inc. reported.
Some 12,300 job ads were posted online locally this month, down from 12,900 in February but up from 9,400 a year ago. New, unduplicated online ads were down roughly 9 percent to 8,200 in March from 9,000 in February, but were up 41 percent from 5,800 a year ago.
The Rochester area includes Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans and Wayne counties.
Among the largest metropolitan areas nationally, Rochester continues to lead just Honolulu in terms of new and total ads posted online in March. Total ads posted in the Rochester area this month represent 2.32 ads per 100 people in the work force, down from 2.44 in February but up from 1.78 a year ago.
Online job ads in the Buffalo area fell to 16,100 this month from 16,800 in February, but were up from 14,000 in March 2007. New, unduplicated ads fell to 10,800 in March from 11,600 in February, but were up from 9,100 a year ago. Total ads in the Buffalo area represent some 2.78 jobs per 100 people in the labor force, down from 2.9 in February, but up from 2.43 a year ago.
The Syracuse area is not surveyed.
Total online job ads in the Middle Atlantic region—which includes Rochester and Buffalo—fell to 595,500 in March from 640,900 in February, but were up from 566,200 a year ago. New ads fell to 392,000 from 433,500 last month, but were up from 351,900 in March 2007. Total ads in the Middle Atlantic region represent 2.93 ads per 100 people in the work force, compared with 3.15 in February and 2.81 a year ago.
Nationally, the total number of online job ads fell to 3.73 million in March from 3.93 million in February and 3.75 million a year ago. New online job ads posted nationally also fell from February to March. Some 2.54 million ads were posted this month, compared with 2.76 million in February and 2.49 million a year ago. Total ads nationally represent some 2.45 ads per 100 people in the work force, down from 2.58 in February and 2.47 a year ago.
The help-wanted online data series measures the number of first-time online job ads, as well as the total unduplicated online ads, in nine census regions and 52 metropolitan Internet job boards and job boards serving smaller geographic areas.
