Delphi schedules layoffs

Delphi Corp. plans to lay off roughly 15 percent of its local work force next week, a company spokesman said Thursday.
Some 180 to 200 of Delphi’s 1,300 Lexington Avenue plant workers will be affected by the temporary layoff, Delphi powertrain spokesman John Wray said.
“We are adjusting staffing to meet some production needs and customer requirements,” Wray said, noting the layoff was not a result of the recent United Auto Workers strike on Delphi’s largest customer, General Motors Corp.
“This is just staffing and production needs,” he added. “We’re always looking at … what our customers are needing and where we’re at.”
Delphi will continue to monitor order volume and adjust its local work force accordingly, Wray said.
