Kraft Foods Inc. is uncertain if its plan to cut 8,000 jobs by the end of 2008 will affect the firm’s Avon operations, a company spokesperson said today.
The local facility, Livingston County’s largest private-sector employer, produces Oscar Mayer Lunchables and is home to the only Cool Whip whipped-topping manufacturing operation in the United States and Canada. Some 520 staffers work at the Avon site.
In January 2004, Kraft, based in Northfield, Ill., announced a three-year restructuring program to save $400 million by the end of 2006, which was not expected to affect the Avon plant. The reorganization resulted in the closing of 19 production facilities and 5,500 jobs.
The company announced Tuesday it is looking to close another 20 production facilities, with one in Australia and one in Alabama.
