WOKR to change call letters to WHAM

WOKR-TV 13, Rochester’s ABC network affiliate, plans to change its call letters to WHAM-TV 13 in January.
The WHAM-AM 1180 radio station and WHAM-TV 13 plan to continue to expand their pooling of resources. The separate management teams of WHAM-AM 1180 and WHAM-TV 13 will remain autonomous under their current structures, officials said. Both stations are owned by Clear Channel Communications Inc.
“This is a huge step forward for TV-13 in our mission to serve this community,” said Kent Beckwith, vice president and general manager of WOKR-TV 13
The station had to file with the Federal Communications Commission to obtain the new call letters, he said. WHAM-TV was the first TV station in Rochester, launching in 1949.
“We view this as a powerful strategy, with the reinforcement of one of the strongest and most historic brand names in Western New York—the WHAM call letters,” said Karen Carey, vice president and general Manager of Clear Channel Rochester Radio.
The call letter change will not affect the programming schedule on either station. Employment levels at both stations will remain the same.
