Time Warner expands Net test area

Time Warner Communications has expanded the testing area for its Line Runner service to the Rochester area.
The Internet telephone service will be available to as many as 1,000 of the company’s Road Runner customers in Monroe County as an additional offering.
Intended for use as a fax or second phone line, Line Runner uses voice over IP technology to deliver data to a standard telephone through a cable modem as part of Road Runner’s broadband data stream.
“Our existing market test in Portland (Maine) has shown excellent customer acceptance, so we are looking forward to expanding it to the Rochester area,” said Joseph Collins, Time Warner Cable’s chairman and CEO. “Initial market research indicated that between 40 and 50 percent of Road Runner customers would subscribe to Line Runner and that buy rates for home office applications would be even higher.”
“This test will help us assess the customer’s reactions and operational considerations as well as the impact on data transfer over our network,” said Tom Foster, vice president of engineering for Time Warner Communication’s Rochester division.
In addition to providing cable television to 182 communities in the Rochester and Finger Lakes region, the company offers residential telephone and high-speed Internet access.
Time Warner Communication is a subsidiary of Time Warner Cable, which is in turn controlled by media behemoth AOL Time Warner Inc.
