Departing execs add to upheaval at ailing company

Mary Quin’s early retirement was only one in a series of high-level departures from Xerox Corp.’s executive ranks in 2000. Others included the firing of CEO Richard Thoman.
Company officials declined to provide a list of senior executive departures, but a Rochester Business Journal tally of those who left the document company in 2000 includes:
— William McDermott, president of Xerox’s U.S. Major Account Operations, who left in May to become Gartner Group Inc. president;
— Steve Tait, Xerox Connect president and CEO, who left in July to become senior vice president, worldwide sales, at Gartner Group;
— Pierre Dannon, president of Xerox’s European Solutions Group, who moved in September to British Telecom PLC as CEO of BT’s U.K. division;
— Thomas Vacchiano Jr., president and CEO of Xerox Engineering Systems, who left this month to become president and CEO of Gretag-Macbeth Holding AG.
In addition, William Buehler, vice chairman of the Xerox board of directors and member of the four-person Office of the Chairman, plans to retire effective Jan. 15. Buehler is responsible for the company’s strategy, corporate policies and external relations.
