Arena football is coming to Rochester.
Beginning in 2001, the team will compete at the Blue Cross Arena at the Rochester War Memorial against 15 teams from across the country in the second season of Arenafootball2.
Arenafootball2 is the minor league system of the Arena Football League.
“Arena football is an exciting brand of spring and summer professional football,” said Mark Hamister, owner, chairman and CEO of Rochester Sports Enterprises LLC. “It’s been well received by the Buffalo market, and I believe it will be equally well received by Rochester.”
Rochester Sports Enterprises is a subsidiary of Buffalo Sports Enterprises, which owns the Buffalo Destroyers team in the Arena Football League.
The expansion was originally set for 2002, but AF2 officials gave it the green light a year ahead of schedule.
The team’s name and logo have not been announced.
