Society for the Protection and Care of Children


The Society for the Protection and Care of Children, formerly the Rochester Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children Inc., was established in 1875 by a group of concerned citizens six months after the founding of the first Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children in New York City. The organization’s objective at the time was “to prevent by all lawful means the abuse of children by parents, teachers, guardians or others; to secure the arrest and conviction of parties guilty of offenses against these little ones; and to encourage enlightened and humane methods of nurture and discipline.”
Over the past few years SPCC has broadened its services and client base with the consolidation of other area non-profits with similar goals. In 1993, SPCC merged with Parents and Child Services of Rochester, formerly Parents Anonymous of Rochester Inc., and as a result the Family Outreach Program, Parent and Children’s Support Groups and the Teen Parent Support Program were added to SPCC’s services. The following year, the Rochester Toy Library became part of the organization, and in 1995 Teen-Age Parent Support System Inc. merged with SPCC.
Today, SPCC’s mission is “to empower children and families to improve their quality of life and become self-reliant by providing education, support, advocacy and mutual respect.” To fulfill this mission SPCC works toward stressing the strengths in families and helping them to set achievable goals; participating in continuous quality improvements; becoming a community leader; and embracing diversity.
Each year more than 8,000 children and family members benefit from the many programs SPCC offers. In addition to the ones mentioned above, others include the Middle School Preventive Program, Friends of Youth Program, Family Violence Program and Supervised Visitation Program.
SPCC’s president and CEO is Kelly Reed.
