LSI wins surgical-device patent

A new patent holds promise for LSI Solutions Inc., a research and consulting firm that has changed more than just its name this year.
LSI recently was awarded a patent covering a videoscopic display system and procedure used in surgery. The system uses a video endoscope to project an image onto a sterilized, disposable screen placed near the surgeon’s hands.
Typically, video images used in surgery are projected onto screens that are mounted to the side of the surgical arena. Performing surgery this way is an ergonomic nightmare, “like driving a car while looking out your side window,” LSI President Jude Sauer said.
Sauer, who holds 15 patents covering various surgical and medical devices, has not determined how LSI will take its latest product to market.
The firm is talking with major players in the surgical-device industry about licensing the system, he said. Or LSI might partner with a smaller firm to manufacture and market the product, rather than sell the licensing rights.
LSI is in a transitional phase, Sauer said. The 10-year-old firm, formerly called LaserSurge Inc., changed its name this year after cutting ties with its primary customer.
It worked exclusively with this customer for the past five years, Sauer said. Then “their hard times led to our hard times.”
In addition to the newly patented videoscopic system, LSI is working on several “even hotter” projects, Sauer said. And the firm is trying to boost its visibility. It launched a Web site earlier this summer, and is attending its first trade show in October, at the American College of Surgeons conference in San Francisco.
LSI offers consulting services to the medical-device industry, and collaborates with companies to develop surgical devices or surgical optical systems. The firm also sells the rights to intellectual property it develops independently, Sauer said.
Eight workers are employed at its facility at 2144 Brighton-Henrietta Townline Road.
