Would you like some Chardonnay with your crow?
The Loop was amused by this personals ad that ran in the Democrat & Chronicle last month: “My daughter, Lisa Barbato, knows more about movies than I, Bob Barbato.”
Barbato, who runs RIT’s Small Business Institute, admits placing the ad after losing a bet to his 14-year-old daughter. The two saw “Independence Day,” starring Bill Pullman as a U.S. president who saves the world from aliens. After the movie, the elder Barbato commented that Pullman also was the actor who played Keanu Reeves’ sidekick in “Speed,” another bit of Hollywood high art.
“Lisa said, “Oh, Dad–you’re so wrong. You don’t know how wrong you are,” Barbato reports.
So the bet was made. At home, Barbato searched the Internet to find that, in fact, Jeff Daniels was the actor in “Speed.”
“Here I was full of hubris and I had to eat crow,” Barbato laughs. But the man is certainly a good sport, running the ad for a full week instead of just the one day agreed upon for the bet. (“It was the same price,” he notes.)
And being good-natured is in part a survival tactic, since, as Barbato well knows, “you’re always wrong with a 14-year-old.”
