ratify two-year deal

Strong Memorial Hospital employees have ratified a new two-year contract and canceled a one-day strike originally called for Monday.
Nearly 900 hospital and University of Rochester Medical Center staff are covered by the agreement reached with Local 1199-Rochester. It is the largest health care-bargaining unit in the Rochester area and includes employees such as patient-care technicians, nursing secretaries and housekeeping employees.
The new contract ratified Thursday is retroactive to May 26 and will expire May 23, 1998. Main issues of contention were employee contributions to health insurance and job-security issues.
Employees worked under the old contract, which expired May 25, while negotiations continued under the supervision of a federal mediator.
Union members had engaged in a series of protest actions including a daylong picketing.
The union members were concerned that their jobs not be outsourced and that proper retraining programs be in place as job descriptions evolve. For example, many patient-care technicians have had to become generalists instead of specializing in one skill such as phlebotomy.
