Flynn loses Dick’s account

Publicus/Bloom has beat out the Flynn Agency of Rochester to handle the Dick’s Clothing and Sporting Goods account.
Flynn had held the account for five years, and was in the running until the end of the three-month review this year, said Skip Pile, principal of Pile and Co., the Boston management-consulting firm that worked with Dick’s, based in Coraopolis, Pa.
“At the end, it was a very difficult, but clear, decision,” Pile said.
Pile said Publicus/Bloom, a unit of Publicus S.A. in New York City, had a “terrific creative approach” and predicts that consumers will notice the change in advertising.
Billings could reach $20 million.
Besides Publicus and Flynn, finalists for the account were Euro RSCG Tatham in Chicago–a unit of Havas Advertising–and Marc Advertising in Pittsburgh.
Pile said he was impressed by the amount of work put into Flynn’s proposal.
“I was very impressed that they took nothing for granted with the relationship,” he said.
However, he said, it was time for a fresh approach. Pile noted that Flynn held the account for two years longer than the industry average.
