It is unclear whether massive layoffs announced yesterday by Digital Equipment Corp. will impact its
operations in Rochester.
“We really won’t speculate on that,” spokesman Michael Dodson told the Rochester Business
Journal today. Digital employs 118 workers in Rochester, primarily in sales and service posts.
The firm plans to ax 7,000 workers–or more than 11 percent of its payroll–and will take a $475
million charge in its fourth quarter, related to ongoing losses in its personal-computer business and
languid
European sales. Digital said net income in the fourth quarter, ended June 29, is expected to be
“significantly below” Wall Street analysts’ estimates. The company also said revenues are seen falling
below the prior year’s levels.
