Local restaurant owner Robert Bryant has pleaded guilty to stealing $196,583 in sales taxes collected over three years, the state Department of Taxation and Finance reported Friday.
Bryant, 65, also pleaded guilty Oct. 24 to filing 18 false sales tax returns to hide unreported sales, and to two counts of criminal tax fraud in the third degree, department officials said in a statement. The tax periods were part of 2007 through part of 2010, officials said.
The West Henrietta resident co-owned Joshua Inc., operator of Hicks and McCarthy in Pittsford, before selling it in 2011. He currently owns PB&J Bryant Inc., which does business as the Fruit and Salad Co. at 680 Pittsford-Victor Road.
The 21 felony charges against Bryant included both companies, the statement said. His sentence could range from probation to 15 years in state prison, it said. A sentencing date has not been set.
Bryant was placed on interim probation and assigned to the Monroe County Jail for work weekends, the statement said. He also was ordered to begin repaying the stolen sales tax to the state.
“Honest business people who collect and remit sales tax on behalf of the state and local governments can rest assured that we are committed to seeing that the tax laws are equitably and impartially enforced,” Commissioner Thomas Mattox said in the statement.
