Mayor-elect Lovely Warren has resigned as a representative on Rochester City Council to prepare for her first term as mayor, which begins Jan. 1, she announced Friday.

The council has 30 days to meet and appoint a replacement for Warren’s seat as Northeast District representative, after which the appointee will run in a special election to fill the remainder of her term.

“At this time, I am not sure who will emerge as a candidate to replace me, but I am sure that whomever it is will respect the work that we have done over the past six years and will help build a bright future alongside each of you,” Warren explained in a letter to constituents.

Warren defeated incumbent Thomas Richards in the Democratic primary for mayor in September and defeated Richards—who remained on the Independence and Working Families lines—and Green Party candidate Alex White in the November general election.

“Despite our challenges, the residents of Northeast District are resilient,” Warren said in her letter. “I am committed to continuing the great work that we started and will work with your new representative to make sure that the needs of the citizens of Rochester are put first.”
