Wegmans sets date for closing of East Ave. store

Wegmans Food Markets Inc. has announced the official closing date of its 43,000-square-foot East Avenue location.

The store, which opened in 1962, is to close at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23. The closing will allow the company to demolish the current building in late March or early April. The space will then become the parking lot for the new East Avenue location, set to open the morning of May 19, company officials said.

The East Avenue Wegmans pharmacy will move to a temporary location across the street at 1749 East Ave., next to the Country Club Diner. Wegmans said East Avenue Wegmans employees temporarily will move to other store locations in the area.

“To the extent possible, we will keep the store stocked right up until closing,” said Tony Carnevale, the store’s manager, in a statement. “Much of what remains when the store closes on the 23rd will be donated to FoodLink (Inc.).”
