Darien to open Saturday, honor founder Snyder

Darien Lake Theme & Water Park Resort kicks off its summer season Saturday with a tribute to the park’s founder.

The Genesee County-based amusement and water park is slated to open at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, with new rides and attractions, including a Lakeside Boardwalk area, which features a renovated carousel and a new food area. There is also a new tower thrill ride called Blast Off, which simulates a NASA launch, and an upgrade to the Laser Blast show.

The park plans to honor, at a fountain dedication ceremony, Buffalo businessman Paul Snyder, who purchased Darien Lake in 1964.

Darien Lake, which is open May through October each year, is New York's largest theme and water park resort. It is owned by the Herschend Family Entertainment Corp. The park employs more than 2,000 seasonal workers, as well as some 200 people year-round.

Roughly 1 million people visit the park each year, not including concertgoers.
