New and used car sales in Monroe County improved dramatically in January, Rochester Automobile Dealers’ Association Inc. reported Friday.

Some 2,906 new vehicles were sold last month, flat from 2,919 in December, but up more than 20 percent from 2,436 a year ago. Used-car sales rose from 1,514 in December to 1,663 in January. Some 1,692 used vehicles were sold in Monroe County a year ago.

Area car dealers sold 4,569 new and used vehicles last month, compared with 4,433 in December and 4,128 in January 2012. New-car sales typically fall from December to January, while used-car sales rise, RADA historical data shows.
