Excellus names new VP to lead pharmacy division

Excellus BlueCross BlueShield on Thursday named a new vice president of pharmacy management.

Mona Chitre of Victor will oversee the clinical and operational aspects of the company’s pharmacy program, which spends $1 billion annually on members’ prescription medication, the company said.

Chitre’s responsibilities include clinical program development, formulary and medical management, employer group support and vendor management, Excellus officials said. Her goal is to ensure Upstate New York residents have access to safe, effective and affordable medication.

Chitre has worked at Excellus for more than 12 years. She most recently served as director of clinical services, strategy and policy, officials said. She replaces longtime pharmacy chief Joel Owerbach, who retired this month.

Chitre was one of the first certified geriatric pharmacists in New York.
