Mercy Flight Central to add operating base

Mercy Flight Central is adding a Utica-Rome area operating base, Mercy Flight Central and St. Elizabeth Medical Center officials said Thursday.

A Canandaigua-based non-profit that provides air-medical transport across a swath of Upstate New York, Mercy Flight Central already flies missions in the Utica-Rome area. With the establishment of the new operating base in the Herkimer County town of Schuyler, it will be able to provide faster and more efficient service, Mercy Flight president and CEO Neil Snedeker said.

“While Mercy Flight Central has always served this region, in the event of an emergency we could be flying more than 50 miles to an accident scene. As a result, too many critically injured patients travel by ambulance to the nearest trauma center. This time delay can negatively impact the golden hour, which is critical for first responders in saving lives,” Snedeker said.

The air-medical service’s expansion fills a serious void in emergency medical transport for the region, St. Elizabeth Medical Center CEO Richard Ketcham said.

Slated to go into operation in March, the new operating base is planned to coverage to mid-state communities in an area encompassing a roughly 60-mile radius. The Schuyler base adds to Mercy Flight Central’s operating base at its Canandaigua home field and an Onondaga County base in Marcellus.
