Cuomo visits Rochester to promote new gun legislation

Gov. Andrew Cuomo was in Rochester on Wednesday to ceremonially sign legislation designed to keep guns from convicted felons and potentially dangerous mental health patients.

Cuomo, who signed the New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act into law yesterday in Albany, repeated the signing Wednesday morning at City Hall.

The NY SAFE Act also bans high capacity magazines and assault weapons.

“It is appropriate to sign the NY SAFE Act here in Rochester, where just weeks ago a gunman senselessly murdered two first responders as they responded to a fire in Webster,” Cuomo said.

“This new law will limit gun violence through common sense, reasonable reforms that will make New York a safer place to live,” he said.

Volunteer firefighters Michael Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka were killed Dec. 24 after being fired upon while responding to a fire on Lake Road.

Among its provisions, the murder of a first responder engaged in duty will become a Class A-1 felony, with a mandatory penalty of life in prison without parole, officials said.
