Ellison Park Cyclocross Festival gets top status

The Ellison Park Cyclocross Festival has been elevated to the highest level of international cycling for October’s seventh annual event, officials announced this week.

The two-day road cycling and mountain biking competition is scheduled for Oct. 11-12, featuring many of the world’s top male and female racers as part of five days of events, officials announced Wednesday.

The Ellison Park event is one of nine Class 1 International Cycling Union cyclocross competitions in the nation and the only one in the state, officials said.

The competition includes amateur cycling each morning.

A twilight cyclocross has been added to this year’s event on Oct. 8 at Brown Square Park, with an amateur race preceding it, officials said. More than 1,000 cyclists and 7,500 spectators are expected to attend.

The festival is presented by Full Moon Vista Bike & Sport LLC, and sponsored by Trek Bicycle Corp. and Rohrbach Brewing Co.

Cyclocross is described as an off-road bike race mixed with steeplechase, officials said.
