Jury finds in Kodak's favor in patent dispute

Eastman Kodak Co. is in line to collect $75.8 million after an eight-person jury in U.S. District Court in a Manhattan on Wednesday found in Kodak’s favor in a patent dispute with Ricoh Co. Ltd.

Kodak sued Ricoh in April 2012, 10 months after Ricoh acquired the Pentax camera line from Hoya Corp., claiming that under a 2002 licensing agreement it had inked with Ricoh, that Ricoh owed licensing fees on Pentax digital cameras.

Ricoh took the position it did not owe fees because Kodak’s licensing deal with Hoya ended when Hoya sold Pentax.

The jury verdict follows U.S. District Judge Denise Cote’s August ruling that Ricoh owed Kodak licensing fees on Pentax digital cameras. Cote left open the question of whether single-lens reflex Pentax cameras fell under the licensing agreement’s definition of digital.

The jury found SLR Pentax cameras are self-contained devices covered by the 2002 licensing pact.
