City officials to break ground on Carriage Factory Apartments

Mayor Thomas Richards and other city officials will attend a ceremonial groundbreaking Thursday to mark the renovation of the Carriage Factory Apartments.

The groundbreaking is schedule for 2 p.m. at 33 Litchfield Street.

The 73,000 square-foot building was originally the home of the Cunningham Carriage Factory and is one of the oldest manufacturing plants in Rochester, built in 1910 to manufacture handmade customized horse-drawn carriages. The building, just on the border of the Susan B. Anthony Preservation District, has been vacant for almost 25 years.

DePaul Community Services Inc. will rehabilitate the historic Carriage Factory building and transform it into a four-story residential building that will 71 units of affordable rental housing to accommodate special needs occupants.

Richards will be joined by City Neighborhood and Business Development Commissioner Carlos Carballada and City Councilmember Dana Miller, along with officials from DePaul and New York State Homes and Community Renewal.
